闺中女儿惜春暮,愁绪满怀无释处;

柳丝榆英自芳菲,不管桃飘与李飞;

一年三百六十日,风刀霜剑严相逼;

花开易见落难寻,阶前闷杀葬花人;

杜鹃无语正黄昏,荷锄归去掩重门;

花魂鸟魂总难留,鸟自无言花自羞;

未若锦囊收艳骨,一抔净土掩风流;

Ts’ao Hsueh-Ch’in: 《The dream of the Red Chamber》

      Dai-yu’s Elegy on Flowers

Flowers a-withering and petals a-flying across the sky,

The red-faded and the scent-died in whose pity-eye?

Air-driven gossamers softly over the spring-bowers,

And willow fluffs wafting landed on the flowered screens.

I who, grieving over in her chamber the spring departed

Where her sorrow couldn’t be housed, a hoe holding in hand,

Step through the portal and my paces

A-retracing on fallen still petals.

The willow-threads and elm leaves being self-fresh-and-self-gay

And apathetic about peach and plum-blossoms drifted away.

Drifted away, but both of them will blossom again next year

When who- might-have-been is then in my darkened chamber?

When third moon rises swallows are used to building their dear

Nest without stopping to think they‘ll peck spring buds next year

and clay again, while the one has gone, left

The empty beams with the attached lurch-old nest.

360 days every-year the cutting winds garthering

In a red rag and the frosts a-piercing keep weighing

Down their fate-shelter, shortening their fresh-fair blossom

And once gone then no gossamer trace left to find them

Easily see flower in full bloom but harder for the ones

A-falling on mud, a hoe in hand, the tears of suffused eyes

Of their grave-digger before steps, lonesome as blood- marks

Dropping and sprinkled on nearby bare-branches

Shouldering hoe, I came back when closed the double door

Which twilight was frozen on, and unsung cuckoo was in muse.

Dimly-lit chamber filled the voices of chill-rains pelting down window

Those awoke my soul as half-slept beneath the half-coolness sheet.

I might have had little to do with she-spring if I were not within

Half-pitied and half-irritated spring now or spring then

Hurt by her a-coming unspoken

And gone in muse, like the parted lights reunited..

Last night I heared a plaintive song from the courtyard

Sung by a soul of flower or a bird of a soul, the dirge

Who could bear? Both of them on a road unrestrained,

Flower self-shy; bird has the muse-sound of voice.

Longing on my winged-heart could fly, following

The flowers to the earthly ending.

The earthly ending

Where is there a scent-bured grave?

Better to shroud the sweet-petals in silken bag as their home

And my palm-soils fully cover their beauty- sorrow.

Make do with their pure- coming and purely- gone

As parted waterway reunited keep neither sink down nor with dirt below

I come to bury them when they are gone

Not knowing the day when I die and who is the one

Of the turned to me would bury my own purely-gone

Even the fashion in it laugh at me as flower-burying folly one!

Standing -watching spring a-departing and flowers a-withering

It is the time for beauty pain-dying.

When once spring ends and beauty unvoiced so-perished,

All living ones know both of flowers and soul gone a-begging!

13、I  who,  grieving over in the chamber the spring departed

Where my sorrow couldn’t be housed, step through the portal and on the fallen petals bearing my paces a-retracing, a hoe in hand. 句中“ grieving … couldn’t be housed” 是該節詩中主語“I”的非限制性定語從句,從句子中where…

14、paces a-retracing:

15、 the willow-threads and the elm leaves being self-gay-and -self-fresh and indifferent to the peach and plum-blossoms drifted away.

該句結構中:and 連接的兩個組合名詞,相當于“主語”:the willow-threads and the elm leaves, 加上了非謂語動詞being, 形容詞:self-gay-and-self-fresh 和用and連接的并列的形容詞indifferent及 介詞“to”帶出的“短語“ to the peach and plum-blossoms ”等構成的一種獨立成分;drifted away是過去分詞短語作后置定語修飾前面的名詞peach and plum-blossoms 的。

例子:the landlady got the most turns, but Pepi was not left out either, the gentlman being the most indifferent of the three.

23、cutting winds garthering in a red rag and the frosts a-piercing :

24、keep weighing down the fate-shelter :

25、Easily see flower in full bloom but harder for the ones a-falling on mud:

“I might have had little to do with she-spring if I were…”
